How to Balance the Oral Microbiome to Help Prevent Gum Problems and Cavities

How to Balance the Oral Microbiome to Help Prevent Gum Problems and Cavities

by admin | Apr 2, 2025

My understanding of oral health has shifted from striving for squeaky-clean teeth to focusing on supporting the good microbes in my mouth. It’s all about balance—rather than killing all bacteria, the goal is to encourage the beneficial ones. Recently, a family member...

Lifestyle Food Nature Spirit
Movement & Wellness Sessions
Cornwall

On a long, dark, vitamin-D-deprived January evenin On a long, dark, vitamin-D-deprived January evening, I booked myself a day retreat run by @Sowena_yw_a_vern, a CIC that prioritises community interest over profit. This means their well-being events are more affordable and not for profit.

Sowena’s day retreat was held at Cabilla Cornwall in Bodmin, where "Imagine if nature was our medicine" is Cabilla’s introduction to their vision.

With a temperate rainforest, private ancient oak woodland, and the River Bedlam running through the land, it was a wonderful place to experience. And for those brave enough, there was the opportunity to take a dip in the river and warm back up in the woodland sauna.
The Sowena facilitators genuinely care about creating a meaningful experience for all with a thoughtfully structured day, taking time to talk to everyone and find out their needs. There is an emphasis on connection and sharing with each other…well, maybe not the cake! The personally-named goody bag showed a deeply caring attention to detail. A beautiful experience to invest in yourself.

February 14th’s s pop-up session will show your February 14th’s s pop-up session will show your feet a little much needed LOVE.

This session will include:

Foot & ankle
Stick mobility ideas for the whole body
Chest muscle release & why
Finishing with foot releasing work looking at bunion prevention.

Foot & Ankle
Yes, foot and ankle work may not spring out at you as a priority, but there will be more spring to your step in strengthening the arches, releasing tightness and balancing the muscles supporting the ankles. One benefit of doing all this is the proper distribution of force from the feet up through all the joints of the body.

Calf release.
We will explore why finding more balance in the lower limb will help prevent common issues like planter fasciitis.

BUNIONS!
Still reading? Hope so. No one wants to talk about those unsightly lumps, but prevention is far better than the cure, as resorting to surgery can be troublesome. Tight narrow shoes and even tight socks can cause the big toe to be pulled off line which may lead to bunions. We’ll look at exercises to help support proper alignment of the big toe.

Stick Mobility
Using a broomstick can be an inspiring prop to mobilise the whole body. I will give you lots of ideas to see how you can benefit from stick mobility.

Chest Muscle Release
Chest muscles become tight in that common hunched forward posture putting our shoulders and neck out of a supportive alignment. We’ll use a release technique then strengthen opposing muscles to help with good posture.

Finishing with some lovely hands-on release work of the feet with an option to use some homegrown comfrey, hemp oil and caster oil balm.

Who is this session for?

These sessions are designed to give you lots of ideas to help bring awareness to common problems and how to prevent them. It is not a replacement for individual assessment should you have pain or an injury and you are wise to visit a relevant health professional to understand your limitations. I work with the requirements of the participants in the session.

10 places available.

Frugal Fireside Food Red Lentil Pâté with Mango Frugal Fireside Food

Red Lentil Pâté with Mango Chutney

There is nothing more satisfying that making spectacular food from frugal ingredients, which could be leftovers, foraged bits and bobs, home grown food or that show stopper…the lentil.

There’s little other foods more frugal than the humble red lentil, of which many of us have a bag buried in the depths of the kitchen cupboards.

I have attempted red lentil pâté recipes in years gone by, but have been disappointed - so disappointed that I wasn’t in a hurry to try again. They were slushy and didn’t have texture, structure or flavour.

Now, years later, I tried again as I have more understanding for what could create a good lentil pâté. There is a marriage between butter, onions and thyme that cannot be underestimated. Sweetening the onions in butter and thyme on a low heat for a while, will go a long way in giving crucial flavour.

Breadcrumbs are a must. Perhaps you have some sourdough needing to be used up. I had some home-made gluten free focaccia left over, and in hindsight I feel a more rustic bread on the verge of going stale gave the pâté a good texture, while soaking up excess moisture.

I added in the leftovers of a fresh batch of mango chutney - the bits that wouldn’t fill another jar.

An easy mistake to make is over processing. Just use a hand held wand whisk, or pulse process and don’t over do it.

But the last step will require patience. After cooking in the oven for about 30 mins, turn it off and let the pâté slowly cool and set, perhaps over night or refrigerate.

The waiting will be SO worthwhile as you reap the rewards of slicing through huge doorstep slabs to accompany thickly buttered toast…with more of that chutney.

November 29th Session: Shoulder Function If you November 29th Session:
Shoulder Function

If you like the idea of wearing thick wooly socks while playing with a range of spiky balls, bands, sticks and foam shapes by a crackling fire, leaving with a feeling in your muscles like melted butter …come along.

One of the best things we can do for good shoulder function is mobilise the upper back region known as the thoracic spine. Lots of folding over desks and devices can leave us rounded, dropping the shoulder forward. It’s a common problem that can put the shoulder out-of-whack. Plus, stiffness in the thoracic spine will also put more strain on your lower back and neck.

In this session we will be releasing general tightness at the front of the shoulder area, mobilising the thoracic spine, exploring stability, and begin strengthening the back of the shoulder and blade area.

We’ll explore lots of accessible movements using simple small equipment.

Don’t worry, the rest of the body comes along too…

Lifestyle is about the everyday, and good food is Lifestyle is about the everyday, and good food is part of the joy of being human.

What’s cooking? My 11-year old daughter and I are working together on recipes and we call this:

Cornish Pasty Pie

It captures all the flavours of the beloved Cornish pasty, without being pastry heavy.

My pastry is made with organic brown rice flour and a dash of almond flour so it’s gluten-free.

That Cornish pasty flavour relies on generous amounts of seasoning with quality sea salt and plenty of pepper.

Served with sweet potato & parsnip chips.

Absolute joy to eat by the fire.

I found a venue that I love: The Hidden Yurt, and I found a venue that I love: The Hidden Yurt, and one that merges with nature!

I’m doing a series of pop-up sessions to explore some lush mobility and release modalities.

In each session I’ll bring the spotlight to various areas such as the shoulders, hips, neck, mid- back, lower back, foot & ankle , pelvic floor and more…However, this is always in context to the whole-body approach as nothing works in isolation and is all interconnected.

October Session: Hip Freedom!

If there is one area my clients love - it’s when they learn techniques to release restriction and tightness in the hip region.

I once heard it described as tooth ache in the hips…a constant dull ache that won’t seem to go away. A general issue here could be too much chair-sitting, and it’s invaluable to know how to regularly rebalance to prevent potential problems.

I’ve put together a session that apple-picks from simple biomechanics, Pilates, self-myofascial release and varied mobilising.

Just ‘stretching out’ won’t cut it. We need to go a little deeper into the function and then give you the tools and knowledge to help prevent uncomfortable tightness, restriction and unnecessary wear & tear.

The class is delivered with a relaxed and self-soothing approach. I expect you will find much of this work very enjoyable and I incorporate various small equipment.

Who is this for?
This is a low level session of slow exploratory movements and you need to be able to get up and down from a mat. There won’t be any chairs but I use poles to help with support/balance when needed.

You will need to reserve a spot as there’s only room for 12.
